Destination Overview

About Florida

Florida is really several vacations in one state. Orlando is the theme-park capital of the world. Miami is Latin-flavored, stylish, and urban. The Keys are a laid-back island chain. The Gulf Coast — Naples, Sanibel, Clearwater — has the calmest, whitest beaches. And the Atlantic coast mixes surf towns with historic St. Augustine.

The theme parks are the biggest draw: Walt Disney World alone is roughly the size of San Francisco, and Universal Orlando has become a full multi-day destination. A park trip needs planning — park reservations, dining bookings, and ride strategies matter more than ever.

Florida's seasons run opposite to most of the US: winter is the glorious, dry, high season; summer is hot, humid, and stormy — but also when families travel and deals appear. Hurricane season (June–November) is a real consideration for late summer and fall trips.

Florida suits families above all, but also couples (the Keys, Naples), beach lovers, golfers, and space fans. Distances are big: Miami to Key West is 3.5 hours; Orlando to Miami is 3.5–4 hours.

Food & Dining

What to eat in Florida

Book Disney table-service restaurants 60 days out. In Miami, the best Cuban food is in Little Havana, not on Ocean Drive.

Known for

Cuban sandwichesKey lime pieStone crabFresh grouperConch frittersLatin food of every kind

Dishes to try

  • Cuban sandwich. Ham, roast pork, Swiss, pickles, and mustard pressed on Cuban bread — Miami's signature.
  • Key lime pie. Tart, creamy, and born in the Keys; try it at Kermit's in Key West.
  • Stone crab claws. Served chilled with mustard sauce, October–May only; Joe's Stone Crab is the legend.
  • Grouper sandwich. The Gulf Coast's everyday classic — blackened, grilled, or fried.
  • Cafecito & pastelitos. Cuban coffee and guava pastries from any ventanita in Miami.

Best dining areas

  • Miami (Brickell, Wynwood, Little Havana). One of America's great food cities — Cuban, Peruvian, and high-end everything.
  • Key West (Duval & side streets). Seafood shacks, Key lime everything, and sunset bars.
  • Orlando (Restaurant Row & Disney Springs). Far better than park food — from food halls to celebrity-chef dining.

Family Travel

Florida with kids

  • Theme parks. Disney and Universal are the main event; plan rest days between park days.
  • Kennedy Space Center. Rockets, shuttles, and astronaut encounters — a hit with ages 6+.
  • Everglades airboat. Alligators at close range thrill every kid.
  • Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Rescued dolphins and sea turtles on the Gulf Coast.

Family-friendly areas: Lake Buena Vista (Orlando) · Clearwater Beach · Naples · Key Largo

Recommended trip length: 7–9 nights: 4–5 park days plus 2–3 beach days is the sweet spot.

  • Build in pool/rest days — park days are exhausting.
  • Stay on-site at Disney for early entry with young kids.
  • Summer means afternoon storms — plan indoor time after 2pm.

Couples & Luxury

Florida for two

  • Key West sunset. Mallory Square's nightly celebration, or a private sunset sail.
  • South Beach weekend. Oceanfront hotel, spa morning, and dinner in the Design District.

  • Bioluminescent kayak. Paddling glowing water on a summer night near the Space Coast.

Entry & visas

Domestic US travel — no passport for US citizens

Safety

Safe in tourist areas. Watch afternoon storms in summer, heed hurricane advisories June–November, and never leave valuables in cars at beaches.

Entry, visa, and health requirements change. Always confirm current rules with the official government sources for your nationality before travel.

Know before you go

  • Theme parks need planning. Book park tickets, dining (60 days out), and Lightning Lanes in advance. Spontaneous Disney trips are expensive and frustrating.
  • Hurricane season is real. June–November, peaking August–October. Buy travel insurance for late-summer trips and watch forecasts.
  • Summer afternoons storm. Brief but intense thunderstorms most afternoons June–September. Plan outdoor time for mornings.
  • Distances are big. Miami to Key West is 3.5+ hours; Orlando to Miami about the same. Don't overpack the itinerary.
  • Winter is high season. The Keys, Naples, and Miami fill up December–April. Book 4–6 months ahead for the best rooms.
  • Sunscreen and hydration. The Florida sun is stronger than it feels, especially with the sea breeze. Reapply and drink water.
