Panama City's skyline across the bay

Vacations / Central America

Panama

Canal, rainforest, and island archipelagos.

Destination Overview

About Panama

Panama is the Americas' most underrated hub: a skyline that rivals Miami, a 300-year-old colonial quarter, the engineering marvel of the Canal, and — within an hour or two — rainforest, Caribbean islands, and Pacific beaches. It's also the region's best-connected hub, with Copa Airlines flying direct from a dozen US cities.

Panama City alone deserves two or three days: the Canal at Miraflores Locks, the rooftop bars and plazas of Casco Viejo (the UNESCO-listed old town), and the Biomuseo. Then choose your escape: the San Blas islands (the Guna people's picture-perfect cays), Bocas del Toro (Caribbean island life), or Boquete (coffee highlands and cloud forest).

The country uses the US dollar, drives on the right, and has excellent infrastructure — it's the easiest 'real Latin America' trip in the region.

Panama suits city-plus-nature travelers, canal enthusiasts, island hoppers, and anyone routing through on Copa (the stopover program makes adding 2–3 days nearly free). Dry season is December–April on the Pacific side.

Know before you go

  • The Copa stopover. Flying Copa through Panama? The stopover program lets you add up to 7 days at no extra airfare — the cheapest way to see the country.
  • San Blas is rustic. The Guna islands mean basic cabins, cold showers, and simple food — the beauty is the point. Sailing charters offer more comfort.
  • Two coasts, two weathers. The Pacific (city, Taboga) is dry December–April; the Caribbean (Bocas, San Blas) rains more but has its own patterns — pack a rain jacket year-round.
  • Casco at night. The old quarter is safe and lively inside its restored core; take an Uber rather than walking the edges after dark.
  • US dollars, US plugs. No currency exchange, no adapters — Panama is logistically the easiest country in Latin America for Americans.
  • Book the Canal transit early. Partial-transit boat trips run limited days and sell out — reserve ahead.
