Singapore's skyline and Marina Bay at dusk

Vacations / Asia

Singapore

Clean, easy, and excellent for a first trip to Asia.

Destination Overview

About Singapore

Singapore is Asia's easiest city: spotless, safe, English-speaking, and packed into an island you can cross in 45 minutes. It's a food city above all — hawker centers serve Michelin-starred meals for a few dollars — wrapped in futuristic architecture, tropical gardens, and a rich mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Peranakan cultures.

The city is compact and brilliantly organized: Marina Bay for the icons (Gardens by the Bay, the Merlion, the light shows), the ethnic quarters (Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam) for heritage and food, Sentosa for beaches and theme parks, and the Botanic Gardens for green calm.

Singapore is hot and humid every day of the year (80–90°F), with brief tropical downpours — pack light clothing and an umbrella, and plan indoor breaks in the afternoon. Everything is air-conditioned.

Singapore suits stopover travelers (2–3 nights is perfect), food lovers, families (the zoo and Sentosa are world-class), and anyone pairing it with Thailand, Bali, or the Maldives. It's also the easiest first stop in Asia for nervous travelers.
