Vacations / Africa

South Africa

Safari, coastline, and wine country in one trip.

Destination Overview

About South Africa

South Africa offers the most complete trip on the continent: a world-class city (Cape Town) beneath an iconic mountain, penguins and the Cape of Good Hope an hour away, serious wine country, a spectacular coastal drive (the Garden Route), and the great African safari in Kruger and the private reserves. And the exchange rate makes it all remarkable value.

The classic first trip is 10–14 days: Cape Town (4 nights), the Winelands (1–2), the Garden Route or a whale-coast stop (2–3), and a safari finale (3–4). The safari belongs at the end — it's the emotional peak.

Seasons are reversed from the US: their summer (November–March) is Cape Town's glorious dry season, while the safari areas are best in the dry winter (May–September). The shoulder months — April–May and September–October — balance both.

South Africa suits nearly everyone: safari dreamers, food and wine lovers, families, hikers, and road trippers. English is universal, infrastructure is excellent, and driving is on the left.

Know before you go

  • Book safari lodges far ahead. The best private reserves sell out 6–12 months ahead for peak season. Three to four nights is the right length.
  • Malaria. Kruger is a low-risk malaria area (prophylaxis advised, especially in summer); Madikwe and the Eastern Cape are malaria-free alternatives.
  • Load shedding. Scheduled power cuts occur; good hotels and lodges have generators. Download the schedule app.
  • Drive on the left. Roads are excellent; avoid driving at night in rural areas (animals and unlit roads).
  • Tipping the safari team. Guides and trackers are tipped separately — budget roughly $20–40 per guest per day total.
  • Seasons are reversed. Cape Town's summer is November–March; safari's best is May–September. April–May and September–November balance both.
