Destination Overview

About Switzerland

Switzerland is a small country that packs in more mountain scenery per square mile than anywhere in Europe. The Bernese Oberland (Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald) has the densest concentration of peaks, waterfalls, and cog railways; Zermatt has the Matterhorn; the Jungfrau region has Europe's longest glacier. Cities — Zurich, Lucerne, Bern, Geneva — are small, elegant, and easy to reach by train.

The Swiss travel system is the best in the world: trains, boats, cable cars, and cog railways are integrated into one timetable and one pass. A Swiss Travel Pass covers almost everything, including museum entry. You rarely need a rental car — the train is faster, cheaper, and more scenic.

Switzerland is expensive — the most expensive country in Western Europe for hotels, food, and mountain transport. But the quality is exceptional, and the scenery is free. The trade-off is worth it for travelers who want pristine mountains, clean lakes, and genuinely efficient infrastructure.

Switzerland suits families, couples, mountain travelers, and hikers. Summer (June–September) is for hiking and lakes; winter (December–March) is for skiing. The shoulder months are quieter but higher mountain passes may be closed.

Top Attractions

The best things to see in Switzerland

What to prioritise, why it is worth your time, and roughly how long to allow.

The Matterhorn at sunrise

The Matterhorn & Zermatt

The world's most photographed mountain, rising from a car-free village reachable only by cog railway. The Gornergrat railway gives the classic view; the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car reaches 12,739 feet.

Why go: The single most iconic mountain view in Switzerland, and the reason most people come to the Valais.

1–2 days

Jungfrau summit

The Jungfrau Region

Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, and Wengen, connected by cog railways and cable cars. The Jungfraujoch railway reaches 11,332 feet — the highest railway station in Europe. The Lauterbrunnen valley has 72 waterfalls.

Why go: The densest concentration of Alpine scenery, waterfalls, and mountain railways in one small area.

2–3 days

Lucerne's Chapel Bridge

Lucerne & Lake Lucerne

A medieval old town with the Chapel Bridge (14th century), the Lion Monument, and a lake that steamer boats explore. Mount Pilatus and Rigi are cable-car or cog-railway day trips.

Why go: The most picturesque Swiss city, and the easiest mountain-and-lake base for first-timers.

1–2 days

Lauterbrunnen valley waterfalls

Lauterbrunnen Valley

A mile-wide valley with 300-foot cliffs on both sides and 72 waterfalls. Staubbach Fall and Trümmelbach Falls (inside the mountain) are the highlights. The base for the Jungfrau and Schilthorn cable car.

Why go: The most dramatic valley scenery in Switzerland, and the inspiration for Tolkien's Rivendell.

Half to full day

Bern's old town in a river loop

Bern

The Swiss capital, with a UNESCO medieval old town curving inside a loop of the Aare river. Arcaded streets, the Bear Pit, and the Federal Parliament. Small enough to see in a day.

Why go: The most beautiful small capital in Europe, and a perfect stop between Interlaken and Zurich.

Half day to full day

Zurich old town across the Limmat

Zurich

Switzerland's largest city, with a medieval old town on the Limmat, two universities, the Kunsthaus art museum, and lakefront promenades. The financial and transport hub — most trips start or end here.

Why go: The gateway city, and worth a day for the old town, lake, and museum scene.

1 day

The Aletsch Glacier

The Aletsch Glacier

The largest glacier in the Alps — 14 miles long and 2,600 feet thick at its deepest. Viewed from the Eggishorn or Bettmeralp cable car stations above the Rhône Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage site.

Why go: The most accessible major glacier in the Alps, and a visible reminder of climate change.

Full day from Interlaken or Zermatt

Lake Geneva from above

Lake Geneva & Montreux

The largest lake in the Alps, shared with France. Montreux has the Jazz Festival and Chillon Castle; Lausanne has the Olympic Museum. Vineyard terraces above the lake are a UNESCO site.

Why go: The most elegant lake setting in Switzerland, with the French-speaking culture and the Chillon Castle.

Mountain railways & cable cars

  • Glacier Express. An 8-hour scenic train from Zermatt to St. Moritz through the Alps. Panoramic windows, meal service.

Hiking

  • Eiger Trail. A 4-hour hike along the base of the Eiger north face — the most dramatic mountain walk in Switzerland.
  • Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg. A flat valley walk past waterfalls and meadows; easy and stunning.
  • Five Lakes Walk, Zermatt. A 3-hour loop past five mountain lakes, each reflecting the Matterhorn.
  • Oeschinensee. A turquoise alpine lake reached by a 20-minute gondola and a short hike; one of the most beautiful in Switzerland.
